I wrote about the new Pregnant Workers Fairness Act, which protects pregnant workers against discrimination in New York City. Today, only three days after the law went into effect, an article appears in the NY Times (http://www.nytimes.com/2014/02/03/nyregion/suspended-for-being-pregnant-an-employee-finds-hope-in-a-new-law.html) describing the plight of a 22 year-old worker at Unique Thrift who was fired after bringing in a note from her doctor that stated she should not engage in "lifting, pushing or carrying heavy objects or loads". She has already had a miscarriage. This kind of action is exactly what the new law is meant to prevent. Her employer is meeting with her attorney next week.
